Looby Loo

Suggested Grade Level: Preschool-K

Based on: Barney & Friends #712: "This Way In, This Way Out!"

Objectives:
"In" and "out" are two of the positional words learned by the very youngest of children.

The children will:
  • know that in and out are positional words
  • identify things that are in and out
  • be introduced to the word "antonym"
Skills:
  • Positional words
  • Gross motor
  • Following directions
  • Body awareness
Materials:
  • Large, open space
Directions:
In a large group, talk to children about the words "In" and "Out." Depending on the level of your class, you may even write out the words for them to see.

Ask children if they can name things that are "out" (trees, grass) and things that are "in" (desks, books).

Now play a game where children will put their body parts "In" and "Out."

Sing:
"Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night.

I put my right hand in.
I put my right hand out.
I give my hand a shake, shake-shake,
And I turn myself about.

Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night.

I put my left hand in.
I put my left hand out.
I give my hand a shake, shake-shake,
And I turn myself about.

Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night.

I put my right foot in.
I put my right foot out.
I give my foot a shake, shake-shake,
And I turn myself about.

Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night.

I put my left foot in.
I put my left foot out.
I give my foot a shake, shake-shake,
And I turn myself about.

Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night.

I put my whole self in.
I put my whole self out.
I give my self a shake, shake-shake,
And I turn myself about.

Here we go looby loo.
Here we go looby light.
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night."

Extension:
Ask children to sit in a circle with their shoes and socks sitting in their laps. Ask them to put their feet in their socks. Now can they put their feet in their shoes?
