Three Cornered Hat
Suggested Grade Level: Preschool-K
Based on: Barney & Friends #715: "Three Lines, Three Corners"
Objectives:
There are shapes all around us. Most preschoolers learn about shapes
naturally as they go about their daily business. A triangle is one of
four (circle, square, triangle, and rectangle) shapes young children
are usually able to identify first.
The children will:
- know that a triangle
is a shape with three straight sides and three corners
- identify objects that
are shaped like triangles
- discover that triangles
can be different sizes
- learn how to make a
triangle
- differentiate triangles
from objects that are other shapes
- be exposed to different
types of triangles
Skills:
- Following directions
- Art
- Cooperation
Materials:
- Newspaper
- Markers, crayons, string
Directions:
After learning about triangles, children will enjoy making these triangle
newspaper hats!
Fold one piece of newspaper in half.
Fold the two corners on the top to meet at the middle.
Fold the bottom edges on either side.
Each child can decorate his/her hats with markers, crayons or string.
Extension:
"Play" the triangle.
Students have worn triangles and now they can play a triangle. Show
children the musical instrument the triangle. Count its sides and corners.
Invite children to take turns playing the instrument. When finished,
put the triangle in your music center for added reinforcement of the
concepts of triangles.
