Brazilian Treats

These sweets are eaten at Brazilian birthday parties.

Materials

  • Ingredients and supplies for making brigadeiros (see recipe)

Directions

Buster's new friends show him how to make a homemade soccer ball Brazilian-style by rolling up a pair of socks, then wrapping other socks around it. These delicious chocolate treats look a little like miniature soccer balls. They're called brigadeiros and they're very popular in Brazil, especially at birthday parties. PARENTS MUST DO ALL THE STOVETOP COOKING! Kids can help with the other preparations.

Ingredients

1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 Tablespoons chocolate milk powder
1/2 stick butter
chocolate sprinkles (or more chocolate milk powder)

Steps

  1. Pour condensed milk into a heavy saucepan. Mix in chocolate powder. Add butter.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring with wooden spoon until the mixture begins to pull away from the sides and you can see the bottom of the pan.
  3. Stir two minutes more, then pour mixture onto a greased dish and let it cool.
  4. Butter your hands and roll into little balls.
  5. Roll the balls in chocolate sprinkles or more chocolate milk powder.
  6. Serve the brigadeiros in small paper cupcake liners.

Talk About It

In this episode, Buster's new friends invite him to join their soccer team practice. At first Buster feels nervous and shy, but soon he is having a great time. Does your child play a team sport? If so, encourage him or her to tell you the things about playing on a team that are really fun and the things that are not so fun. Share some team sports stories from your own childhood experiences. If your child has not yet experienced playing with a team, encourage your child to talk about sports that he or she might like to try.
