Campfire Evening

Gather around a flickering fire... or a glowing flashlight!

Materials

  • A fire in the fireplace, or flashlights
  • Blanket
  • Picnic dinner

Directions

After the roundup, Buster and his dad joined the outfitters, eating food cooked over an open fire and singing songs around the campfire. Plan a similar family evening at home. If you have a fireplace, great! If you don't, just use some flashlights. Spread a blanket on the living room floor, turn off the lights, and eat dinner by firelight or flashlight. Sing songs together. Tell your child stories from when you were young. Or make up scary stories! (Just make sure to turn the lights on for a few minutes before everyone goes to bed!)

Talk About It

Ask your child, "What was your favorite part of the video? What things would you like to do if we went to South Dakota and visited Chris and Levi and their families?" For more information about Crazy Horse and contemporary Lakota life, share the books "Crazy Horse's Vision" and "Grandchildren of the Lakota" with your child. (See Related Books.)
