Which packaged foods are kosher?

Directions

In this episode, Mattie and Buster visit a neighborhood grocery store and Mattie points out the special symbols that indicate that a packaged food is kosher. "Kosher" means that food has been prepared according to many strict Jewish guidelines, the most basic of which is not mixing meat and dairy. Check the food packages in your kitchen to see if they carry these or other symbols. Encourage your child to look for these symbols the next time you're at the store together. These four are the most popular:

In addition to these symbols, the letter "D" means the food has dairy products in it. The word "pareve" indicates a food that can be eaten with meat or dairy. "Kosher for Passover" means the food adheres to the even stricter guidelines of Passover.

Talk About It

Aryeh shares his family's Friday night traditions with Buster. What are some of the things the Goldsteins always do for shabbos? Together, make a list of some of your own family rituals. Can you think of five things your family always does? Then talk about family rituals you might like to begin.
