Activities

Keep the Beat

Grab containers and spoons and strike up the band!

Materials

  • Recycled containers
  • Household objects

Directions

Percussion instruments can be found all around you. With your child, explore the different drum sounds you can make with plastic, metal, and cardboard containers. Put objects inside and turn them into shakers. Try strumming and plucking a comb, rubber band, or a chopstick, ruler, or plastic knife extending over the edge of a table.

Beat a simple rhythm pattern on a "drum." Have your child listen and repeat. Reverse the roles — let your child set a beat, you echo. Hold a family jam session. One person starts a steady beat. One by one, family members join in, adding their own rhythm.

Talk About It

Ask your child, "How was Stephan's school on Wind River Reservation similar to your school? How was it different? What part of Stephan's school did you like best?" You and your child may enjoy the book, "Back to School" (see Related Books). It contains fascinating photos of school life in countries around the world.
