Activities

Knot It!

Learn to tie a nifty knot.

Materials

  • Rope or string

Directions

Knowing how to tie a knot is an important skill for rock climbers. It's a skill that also comes in handy for wrapping packages, fixing broken shoelaces, and lots of other things. You can use a bowline knot (pronounce BOH-lin) to make a loop to slip over a post or to tie a rope to your dog's collar or to the handle of a wagon. The "rabbit and the rabbit hole" story makes this an easy knot for kids (and adults!) to learn.

Diagram of looping the rope

Make a rabbit hole. (Make a loop in the rope, not too close to the bottom. The loose bottom end of the rope should cross in front of the upper part of the rope.)

Diagram of forming the knot

The rabbit comes up out of its hole. (Bring the bottom end of the rope up through the "rabbit hole." Leave a loop hanging below.)

Diagram of completing the knot

It goes around the tree, then down its hole. (Wrap the bottom end of the rope behind the upper part of the rope and then back down the "rabbit hole." Pull the knot tight.)

Talk About It

Learning to climb a cliff was difficult and a little scary for Buster, but with the help and encouragement of his friends, and a willingness to try, try again, he made it to the top! Tell your child about a time you worked hard to achieve something difficult or scary. What helped you do it? How did you feel? Encourage your child to tell you similar stories from his or her life.
