Buster joins DeShe and his grandmother in a volunteer visit to a local senior home. Buster helps serve snacks, chats with some of the senior, has a great time, and feels a great sense of satisfaction that he has been able to be of use to others. It's important and empowering for kids to gain a sense of themselves as a contributing member of a family and community. Take some time to help your child choose a way that he or she would like to volunteer. Your child could choose to help you or another family member take care of a long-neglected chore around the house, or to help out an elderly neighbor by raking leaves, shoveling snow, walking a dog, or moving heavy trash cans. Together, you and your child might want to look into volunteering with a local group. For lots of tips and ideas (large and small) on volunteering, check out Zoom into Action on the Zoom Web site.

Talk About It

Has your child ever been to camp? Did he or she do any activities similar to the ones Buster and DeShe enjoyed? What sort of activities would fill the day at your child's ideal summer camp? Together dream up the perfect schedule of events, from morning to bedtime.
