We All Pitch In

Create a Family Chores and a Family Fun chart.

Materials

  • Small magnets
  • Drawing supplies
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Photos of family members (optional)

Directions

Create a Family Chores chart to hang on your refrigerator. Write daily chores on a column on the left: set the table, feed the cat, bring in the mail, et cetera. Glue the names or pictures of the people in your family to magnets. Let each person place his or her magnet next to the chore he or she is responsible for. Chores can rotate from day to day, week to week.

When chores are done, it's time for fun! Make a Family Fun pie chart. Draw lines to divide a large circle into wedges. In each wedge, write or draw something your family enjoys doing together: going bowling, playing board games, baking cookies, watching a video together, having a family dance party, et cetera. Write days of the week on small pieces of paper and attach magnets to the back. Let each member of the family place a day-of-the-week magnet on a fun event they would like to do. Set aside time in the evening or on the weekend to do these special fun events.

Talk About It

Is your child part of a small family or a large one? Ask your child, "What do you think it would be like to have lots of siblings (or to be an only child)? What are some of the good and bad things about being an only child? What are some of the good and bad things about living with lots of brothers, sisters, and cousins? Would you want to be one of the oldest kids in a big family or one of the youngest? Why?"
