Get ready for a barrel race!

Materials

  • Three sturdy objects to serve as obstacles or "barrels" in a barrel race
  • Stop watch (optional)
Diagram showing cloverleaf route around obstacles

Directions

At the rodeo, Tayler competes in a Barrel Race. You and your child can watch the barrel race, then set up your own barrel race track. Draw a starting line (which is also the finish line) and place three obstacles in a triangle pattern, as shown in the diagram.

First walk the course together, following the proper cloverleaf route around the obstacles (see the diagram). Try galloping, then try running. If appropriate, once you and your child are used to the path around the "barrels," try timing each other with a stopwatch as you run the race. Try to beat your own best time.

Talk About It

Tayler's mother and grandfather rode in rodeos when they were younger. Now Tayler is carrying on the family tradition. Talk to your child about family traditions that he or she may be carrying on. It may be quite simple, for example eating a certain food or visiting a particular vacation spot just like grandpa.
