Activities

Songwriters, Inc.

You and your child can be songwriters!

Materials

  • None

Directions

Billy Dean tells Buster that anything can become a song — the simplest or the most crazy thing you can think of. Have your child come up with an idea for a song, then write it together. An easy, fun approach is to choose a familiar tune, like "Old MacDonald" or "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" and write new words to it.

Talk About It

An important part of media literacy is to be aware of the power of advertisements and to try to resist their pull. Talk with your child about how commercials try to convince people to buy products. Ask your child about TV commercials he or she remembers. Remind your child that the people on commercials are actors whose job is to say the lines the ad writers write. Ask your child, "Do you think the cereal or snack with the best commercial is probably the best tasting or most nutritious?" You and your child may want to keep a list of the commercials you see and the foods or products they are advertising. After you have collected a list, talk about the types of food that are advertised most. How many commercials did you see that advertised fresh fruit or vegetables? For more information, visit the PBS Parents Guide to Children and Media.
