Surfboard Designs

Decorate a paper surfboard.

Materials

  • Large piece of cardboard (a cardboard box unfolded)
  • Utility knife for cutting out a surfboard shape (adults only!)
  • Tempera paint
  • Brushes
  • Aluminum pans in which to pour the paint
  • Cookie cutters and other washable objects to use as stamps
  • Glitter and stickers (optional)

Directions

Forrest and Coral take Buster to their dad's surfboard workshop and Coral gets to decorate her surfboard with a stencil of a flower. Forrest says that when it is his turn to get a new surfboard, he wants to decorate it with a stencil of a chicken. Cut a surfboard shape from a large piece of cardboard. Ask your child, "What sort of designs do you want on your surfboard?" Find a variety of washable object to dip in paint and use as stamps — cookie cutters are great. Styrofoam food trays can be cut into shapes and used as stamps. Your child can also use brushes and paint a design. If you have glitter, sprinkle some on!

After the paint dries, you can add stickers.

Talk About It

At Cocoa Beach, Buster joins a class to learn about surfing safety and technique. He and the other children "carpet surf," practicing on the floor how to paddle out to sea then push up and balance on their boards, before trying it out in the waves. Repeat the instructions as your child practices on his or her "surfboard": "Lie on your stomach. Paddle, paddle, paddle. Feel the wave lift you. Now push up! Stand up. Keep your weight on the front foot. You're surfing!"
