What's Cooking?

Make favorite family recipes with your child.

Materials

  • Ingredients and supplies for making a recipe you loved as a kid
  • Three-ring binder or other notebook

Directions

Find a recipe of something you loved as a kid. Make the recipe with your child. Let your child help measure and mix. Notice the changes that take place when ingredients are combined and heated. When you're done, enjoy your creation! If your child liked the recipe copy it down and place it into a three-ring binder. Below the recipe, you may want to write childhood memories associated with this food. You can also write down comments from your child and other family members. This binder can become a special family collection of recipes you and your child enjoy making together. Your child can decorate the binder with original art or family photos

Talk About It

One of Athena's grandmothers was born in Greece, the other was born in Cuba. Their language, food, and everyday culture is different. Athena feels at home in both places. Two of the recommended books, "Liliana's Grandmothers" and "I Love Saturdays y domingos" explore similar situations. Talk with your child about the different cultures in the homes of two of your relatives or friends. Think about things you like in both households.
