Chivda

Buster's Chivda

Visit my blog about Chennai, India

There are many ways to make this Indian snack food, and this is just one. I created a simple version that's easy to make, and tasty to eat!

This recipe uses an oven and a microwave. So check with a grown up before you get started.

What you do

  1. Check with a grownup and wash your hands before you begin.
  2. Turn on the oven to 250 degrees so it can get hot while you prepare the ingredients.
  3. Put the first five ingredients (corn cereal through raisins) into the large baking dish. Stir them together with the large spoon. (If your baking dish isn't big enough for easy stirring, use a bigger one.)
  4. In the medium bowl, combine the next five ingredients: (salt through turmeric). Put aside.
  5. Put the butter into the microwave-safe bowl, and melt it in the microwave. (Each microwave is different, but start with 30 seconds. If the butter's not melted yet, put it in for another ten seconds. Repeat until butter is melted.)
  6. Use oven mitts to remove the melted butter from the microwave, and pour it over the cereal combination in the baking dish. Stir the cereal to coat it all with butter.
  7. Then pour the bowl of mixed spices into the cereal-and-butter mixture. Stir the cereal to coat it all with the spices.
  8. Use oven mitts to put the baking dish of spiced cereal into the hot oven. Bake for 30 minutes. Every ten minutes, use oven mitts to remove the baking pan from the oven and stir the mixture.
  9. After 30 minutes, the chivda is done. Use oven mitts to take the dish of warm chivda out of the oven. Put it on something that will protect the counter from the hot baking pan. (Remember to turn off the oven!)
  10. Use the ladle to scoop the chivda into the serving dishes. (Be careful, the baking dish may still be very hot.) Serve, and enjoy!
  11. And remember: clean up the kitchen when you're done.
