BUSTER: Uh, okay. I don't know what that is, but I guess I'll find out.
ARJUN: One thing about the mridangam that's not in much Western music is something called the konnakal and the talam.
BUSTER: The kunda… what?
ARJUN: Konnakal and talam. And the talam is basically the beat of the music. The konnakal is how you would say it. Like an example would be: thut thom kitathaka, thaka thari kitataka.
BUSTER: Huh? What did you just say?
ARJUN: It's thut thom kitathaka, thaka thari kitataka. And when I play it, it sounds like this…
BUSTER: That was amazing! You guys are really good at those drums! Do you practice a lot?
VARUN: An hour.
ARJUN: An hour a day. About seven hours a week.
BUSTER: That is a lot. You've probably practiced the mridangam more in one month than I've practiced tuba for my whole life!
