About the FETCH! Fone mobile site
Ruff has a million things to do to get his new movie off the ground. He needs lots of help, especially with his schedule and budget. You've got Ruff's FETCH! Fone and with it you can help him out by keeping his schedule straight, making sure he gets to the right place at the right time, and has enough money to buy snacks.
Each game in this mobile suite focuses on a different aspect of the national standards for first and second grade math curriculum on the measurement of time and money including:
Time:
- Associate activities with time of day
- Tell time to the hour on analog and digital clocks
- Tell time in intervals of hours, half hours, and quarter hours
- Explore what you can do in a minute
- Order events
Money:
- Identify and name pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
- Identify the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters
- Identify total value of a set of dimes, nickels, pennies, and quarters
- Determine if you have enough money to buy an object
About FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman
Part game show, part reality TV, and part spoof, FETCH! features real kids, real challenges, real science, and an unreal host named Ruff Ruffman (yes, he's an animated dog!) FETCH! mixes live-action with animation and breaks the mold with its educational and comical take on America's newest television genre. Targeting six- to ten-year olds, it is spontaneous, unscripted, and full of twists both on air and online.
FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman is produced by WGBH Boston.
About the Curriculum:
FETCH!'s science and math curriculum uses a framework of approaches, Habits of Mind, and season-long themes to present science as both process and inquiry.
The framework of approaches include:
- Data Challenges: Kids collect and analyze data to answer a question.
- Career Challenges: Kids spend a day in the life of a scientist.
- Design Challenges: Kids engineer a solution to a problem using the steps of the engineering-design process.
- Game Challenges: Kids learn about science through play.
- To solve all these challenges, kids need to draw from a variety of Habits of Mind.
These Habits of Mind can be divided into two categories: "attitudes" that kids use to approach all challenges (curiosity, perseverance, risk-taking, and creative and critical thinking) and "strategies."
The strategies are:
- Investigate it Yourself: Kids solve a challenge based on information they get through experimentation.
- Ask the Expert: Kids solve a challenge based on information they get from someone — either an adult or another kid — with more experience.
- Design it Yourself: Kids solve a challenge by designing a solution to an engineering problem.
- Use Prior Knowledge: Kids solve a challenge based on their own prior knowledge and experience.
