"I'm Hispanic and we Hispanics used to do all the farm work and all that stuff. (No offense). We used to never have freedom. Most of my family is an illegal. Both sides of my family. My dad is working to become an official citizen to the U. S. (he has his green card and so does my mom) and my mom is too. I'm an official citizen but most of my friends aren't. So they don't have every single right to do what an official U. S citizen does. So what freedom really means is that we have the right to do a lot of things! Run for president, try to become a citizen, anything. We HAVE a declaration. A declaration that says we have freedom and the right to do things! You can stand up for yourself. Stand up for the country. Cesar Chavez stood up for people! Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln! All those important people helped out country the way it is! So ENJOY the FREEDOM 'Ôcause you never know what's gonna happen next..."

"I think freedom means being able to do things that sometimes can't be done. Like take Hatshepsut, the first female pharaoh of Egypt. Nobody liked the fact that there was a women as pharaoh, be she had the freedom to be pharaoh. And I think that that was very special."

"There are many definitions of the word freedom. The Random House College Dictionary states that freedom means, in the philosophical sense, "The power to make one's own choices or decisions without constraint from within or without." I think that it also means setting yourself apart from the secular and not letting the ways of this world suppress your uniqueness; being safely far from the line between good and evil-the line that sets God and Satan apart; not letting yourself be dominated by the desires and sins of man and woman, etc. We do inherit freedom, it just lies dormant in our brains because we have been so corrupted by the world that we don't know how to exercise it. Not even adults can prevent freedom, they're just afraid of what extent freedom would go to if we found out how to truly exercise it. Now it might be wise to mention here that I am a Christian. My advice to you non-Christians, is, freedom also means acknowledging that there is a God in this world, and that he controls every aspect of our lives..."

"Freedom. It's often a misused word. It doesn't just mean being able to do what you want. It means freedom from yourself. From all bent wants and passions. Freedom separates man from beast. That is freedom...Choose."

"What I think freedom really means is, is that you are able to do make your own choices, and do whatever you want. But to some people, freedom means a lot more than that. To those people, freedom means that you can be able to live your live and actually be able to do those things that help your family survive. It can be those two things."

"Many people think America is Freedom. It's not. Yeah there's diversity and freedom of speech and all that. But what about in the middle schools? I see kids who go home everyday having a bad day. Do you know what it's like to be in a communist country? I mean they can't DO any thing like if they don't like their Leader they can't say anything! "Freedom means lots of stuff to lots of different people. But here's what I think it means: Freedom happens whenever you feel, I dunno, FREE! That's when I feel free."

"I think freedom means getting to make your own choices, and having an opinion/say-in-the-matter. "Doing whatever you want to" is a fine way to say it, but I believe it's also more than that. It's about choosing your own choices, and what's best for you, or what you think is right. It's up to you to choose, and you have to choose that knowingly. Freedom when you leave home is like you being on your own, with no one to fall back on. You have to deal with the consequences that come along with independence and freedom. And deal with things on your own. Yep, it's not ALWAYS all it's cracked up to be. I mean, sure, you CAN stay up all night and eat ice cream for breakfast and never do homework or have a job, but what's going to happen to you? You'll wind up on the street. As a kid, it's ok to take a break and let other people do the job, but it's tough as an adult. Remember that freedom and free reign brings a TON of responsibility. Enjoy mild-freedom and carefree life while you CAN. Luv y'all!"

Freedom means knowing what is right from wrong and doing what you think is right with no one harassing you. Freedom means to always follow your hart. Freedom means everyone is equal. Freedom dose NOT means you don't have to follow rules. Freedom means knowing what is fair and what is not. And if you think there is an unfair rule challenge it. Freedom is to say what you believe in. Freedom is talking about your feelings without someone saying that your feelings are stupid or don't matter. Freedom dose not mean disobeying everyone who are just trying to keep you safe. Freedom is what is inside YOU!"

"Freedom means that everyone has rights and everything (well, mostly everything) should be fair for all citizens. And freedom can also mean that we have to respect people's opinions. Like, let's say that polls are the most important thing in the world and there's this poll online that says: "What's your favorite pie? Blueberry, apple, or pumpkin?" and you and your friend are on the computer and see the poll. And you're like, "I like blueberry, " and your friend's like, "I like apple." ’ÄúFreedom is the right of all people which allows them to do anything they desire, as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of other people. Freedom is also the right to be safe, without other people or things making you afraid. Freedom is the right to say what is on your mind, without anything trying to stop you from telling others what you think is right, peer pressure included. In this sense, no one is really ever free. The United States and other countries may claim to be free, but no matter where we are in the world, we are all influenced by what other people think of us (peer pressure). Forget living in a free country, I want to live in a free world.’Äù

Not physically, but scholastically, in the form of daily grade checking on the computer, as well as daily binder scouring. ’ÄúI think freedom really means u can do anything you want that’Äôs totally fair! I mean some people that go to my school totally think freedom is doing whatever they want (including hurting peoples feelings for own enjoyment). You gotta make freedom fair though, no matter what! Freedom should be fair! I see homeless people on the street every day and every night and I see people make fun of them and I think ’ÄúThey don't have freedom to eat and you take away the freedom to have never give up feelings?’Äù the people who do it for fun are usually teens, rich stuck up people (I’Äôm not saying all so no offence) and just plain mean people. I often save up ten dollars or so and give it to the homeless. They are so joyed when I do that so they go buy fast food, coffee, or flea market jackets. I am so happy to see the look on their faces just when I walk by. They have respect for me and I thank them for it. Anyway, Freedom needs to be fair and that’Äôs all it is (ok so we have to stop using and making money and money factories too). But freedom can only be in a perfect world. Freedom is an interesting concept. Yes, you do get to do whatever you please but you also have a sense of liberty. You do not have to obey a master to do whatever you do, but you also have some limits. I think it means making your own choices and not being punished when the public doesn't agree. Freedom is something everybody tries to explain, but it doesn't sound quite right. Most people have a basic opinion of it.

In my particular case, I believe I will be free when I turn 18, then I will not be suffering any abuse, but I will only be truly free when I learn to forgive my dad, despite all the horrid things he's done.
--Michael
Freedom is where you can say what you want, without being judged.
--Fhughads, 11
I think that freedom means being able to make your own choices in life and being able to live your life in the pattern that you choose. But, I also think that we should have rules against bad things that can harm us, or other people and animals...
--BusyGirl123
I think that freedom means to be your own person and live your life the way you want to live it. : ] <3.
--Monica, 12
I think freedom means that we have rights to free speech and thought. But it also comes with responsibility. We still have rules to follow so that our countries, town, etc. Stay civilized. Freedom is a burden is disguise.
--Taylor, 12
Freedom is to do whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want, wherever you want, with whoever you want. Its YOUR choice, and no one can stop you. *good choice. Or bad. *.
--Tinker Bell, 13
I think freedom means that you arent always being told what to do or its ok to say to some things. I think this because I have trouble saying no to people when they ask me to do something.
--Kuankuan
When youre dreaming. Nobody can tell you what to dream.
--Dale
Freedom means that you can be who you are and embrace that without the consent, judging or editing of another person.
--HarryPotter, 13
I feel freedom is being open with yourself and the people around you. Also being in touch with nature and your surroundings. Really Being comfortable with who you are and the fact that you are comfortable with that...
--Anonymous
Thinking about all of those who aren't living like you and getting the care and love like you. Knowing that you are lucky and you should be grateful.
--BaBy gUrL, 13
Embraced by light, freed from those chains, and released into your destiny.
--Aang, 9
Freedom is being able to be you and no one can stop you. But, people at my school like to make fun of laws of my religion. I told one of my classmates that one thing was against the law. Now everyone is convinced that Hinduism is unfair. I am afraid to show my Indian dress to my classmates because they may laugh.
--Netra, 9
To me freedom means having the right to believe what you do without being persecuted for it.
--Navygirl, 13
I think freedom is about being comfortable with religion, free speech etc. Freedom is taken for granted, for instance, women in this country get to chose the men they marry, in different country it would not matter if you hated the man you had no say in who you married, your parents would chose the man. Over the last two years I have realized that freedom is taken for granted, and we need to be thankful that we have the freedom to do things. I am really thankful that in America me and my family have the freedom to serve God in our church. One of the missionaries that my church supports, he told us that in Israel if you are caught even holding a Bible study that you would be arrested. And I thank God that He gives me and my family the privilege to attend church without being arrested. Like I said, FREEDOM IS TAKEN FOR GRANTED!!!
--Indygirl14
Freedom means to be free to do anything. Go anywhere in my mind, or just have fun being free.
--Lauren, 8
Peden, 11 that really stinks. Hopefully, we'll have a new president 2 get us out of this war in Iraq.
--Yvette, 12
To me, freedom means everything. I feel really sorry for all those people in Communist countries like China who have so little freedom from the government. And just think about all those people starving to death, with no clean water, and no medicine in Africa while we are here worrying about whether our hair is okay or Who's going out with whom" or stupid stuff like that and celebrity gossip. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
--Amethyst, 11
Freedom means that everyone, women, children, men of every race and kind are free, not just certain kinds of people...
--Hello, 12
Freedom means being free. End of story. Buh-bye : ).
--Jon, 9
Freedom means being yourself and standing up for yourself. It means you should only be judged by the person you are inside and not by what you look like. So why judge when you can make PEACE.
--Ryant, 12
Anonymous I know that and also I agree with you but my uncle is there and I hope hes safe. I also hate the war we're in now but we really want to stop this war and get out o' this situation right now...
--ChristyCarlsonR, 12
U know what stinks????? Ppl r all mad at Bush 4 the war and every thing but if the soldiers didn't want 2 fight they didn't have 2 join the army or air force or military! It was their choice. Theyre fighting 4 what they believe in!!!! And what also drives me nuts is that America is supposed 2 be a democracy...But it's not!!!! It's a republic/democrat if it was a real democracy we would have voted on if we went 2 war or not!!!!
--Peden, 11
It means that you can do whatever you want to do, and nobody is going to try to get in your way.
--Courtney, 11
Being free 2 do anything thats not bad:).
--CuteGirl
We can't just Stop" the war in Iraq. As much as it totally stinks, we need our forces to be there until things calm down or else another 9/11 will happen. Im not saying that I like the situation, in fact I hate it. I've now had 2 brothers go to the Middle East and it's not an easy thing to deal with, but I deal with it. When you think about, all we're really doing over there is making it a better and safer place for everyone. I think we should be proud of it.
--Anonymous
Freedom? hmm. It's when you can tell others about your faith freely without the fear of being persecuted. It is also the freedom to home school. PLEASE keep the 20 home school families in Germany in your prayers! They are being Persecuted for it!
--A Homeschooler, 13
Xenia, 10 do u know how we got our freedom? We got it from George Washington and now we have George W. Bush as our president. Well, we still use guns in Iraq but the problem in Iraq has to be stopped right now.
--Alexis, 12
Freedom is what you fight for with words and when we used to have guns we shot the British but now we use words. We're having a problem in Iraq and we need someone to stop this problem in Iraq...
--Bianca, 12
I've experienced freedom in my own family because if you have freedom that means that your family trusts you and believes in you. Your family should not show any violence to you also.
--Ramya, 9
Freedom means freedom, but I only think adults need it. Because we're minors, we have to follow our parents' rules. But adults don't want to follow bad laws, so they need some freedom. Get what Im sayin'?
--Anonymous
Freedom is when you fight for what is right, never letting a thing get in your way. Of course, you fight with words, but it's more effective than the any gun. When you get what you want, you manage it correctly. That is what freedom is.
--AdventureGirl, 9
Freedom means to have the right to do things!
--Tree, 11
Freedom is Summer Vacation.
--Anonymous
There are lots of kinds of freedom, but the most IMPORTANT kind is when we got set free almost 2,000 years ago when Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins. Now we can go to heaven and be with Jesus forever.
--Mikael, 8
I think freedom means to be free do what ever you want not what people tell you to do unless your parents tell you to do something and freedom means for your parents to trust you let you do what you want to do and stop treating you like your a baby.
--Dominique, 11
It means doing something good for United States and I want United States to have FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM every day!
--Harvey, 11
Freedom is to have options to not be enslaved. To have many things.
--Lauren
I think freedom means that you can do what you want and help others- I would stop the war in Iraq and bring our soldiers home.
--Thalia, 9
I think it means being able to live. I know we breath in air but thats not what I consider living. What I mean is freedom of speech and being able to have time to do things you enjoy.
--Zinkoff
I think it means that we don't have to be slaves any more that we could be free and not do what somebody tells me to do and I am proud to be free. That is what freedom means to me. Why? , Because I know I am going to make a change someday in the future.
--Marisela, 12
To me freedom means that no one can rule you. Nobody owns you. Youre free. It's here in our country. The only person and I mean only person who owns you is god. Why? Because he made you. And speak the truth.
--Xenia, 10
Hey HarryPotter, 12 I guess I went overboard. Keep ur name but I also want 2 know if u have more alias names if u know what I mean...
--AmyIsTheBestGirlName, 12
I think freedom means to be free, but we still have to do homework and do what our parents say.
--Gisela, 10
I don't think a lot of people are truly free. Freedom means you can do whatever you want, and you don't live by any rules. I can't think of any place that doesn't have any rules though, any anarchies or anything. Because people can abuse freedom and it's hard to trust everyone and to be fully trusted. So we have rules. We have some freedoms in the U. S and other countries but we're not completely free.
--Vinni, 12
I don't know what freedom means.
--CaliforniaIsMyState3, 12
"You can stand up for yourself and speak out when you have ideas. You can act on your decisions, and pursue your interests. There are no stereotypes and you can be who you want to be."
--Miri, 13
"I change what I said. I think freedom means to be able to cry when youre sad and smile when youre happy. You should let your expression flow through you like sand through your fingers. You shouldn't be held back from anything or anyone. I also think Freedom means to be able to do what you want. It means to not be under the control of others. It means that you are free to believe in what you want. It means you are free to do what you want. You can say what you want and speak a free mind. Nobody can tell you what you can't do."
--KHpigs
Freedom is something that we have in the US. It's a free country. Freedom of speech, ideas, feeling, thoughts...God Bless America...
--Elecktro, 13
Im keeping my name to ForgottenGirl instead of Tinkerbell.
--ForgottenGirl, 12
We get more freedoms as we get older, that is for sure. It's a good thing, too. My little brother doesn't get as many freedoms as me, and I think that's cool.
--Lauren
Freedom means to be able to do what you want. It means to not be under the control of others. It means that you are free to believe in what you want. It means you are free to do what you want. You can say what you want and speak a free mind. Nobody can tell you what you can't do.

--HarryPotter, 12
Heyy! Nothing to say. Just wanted to say heyy...LOL. Anyways since I am e-mailing a paragraph anyways, I might as well say what I think freedom means. I think it means that you can do what you want to do, and no one has to decided for you. : ) .
--ForgottenGirl, 12
I think Freedom really means you have the right to free speech and to express your thoughts and religion. Though we had many groups and clans in our country that not all of us approve of, but if we were to join a group like that, we would be able to because we're free.
--Quinci, 13
I think it can mean that you can do whatever you wish we can also go to sleep because are people are fighting for our freedom to keep.
--Taylor, 10
I think freedom means being free. Because Texans want slaves at first. In the song Im proud to be an American It talks about freedom.
--Vanya, 8
"Freedom to me is being able to say and do what you want (except anything that would hurt someone like kill a person ). One freedom that seems to be getting taken away is the freedom of religion. Christians are being persecuted more and more, especially in schools. Im homeschooled and Im very happy about that.
--FredtheMoose
Freedom means having your own rules and not being ruled by someone else at all when u wanna make your own important rules that are suppose to be followed and are very important to everyone in the all of the states. Wherever they are they won't need someone from England ruling over them because George W. Bush is the president of the United States of America.
--TimeGirlForLife73849, 12
To have the right of speech, right to go to court, right to go to school, right to have protection, right to marry whoever you want, etc.

Freedom means offensive but legal right in Crazyworld, though I am from America. Freedom here means...YAY!
--Chocolate
I believe freedom means you can do basically anything you want to do. But I choose to try to do what's right even though we can do anything wrong.

I had to do a report on child labor. I felt really bad about it so when I wrote my report I added 'I think everyone should deserve to be free even if they r fat thin black white tall short I think everybody wants freedom!
--Americangirl
I believe freedom means having the rights to do as you please (to some extent) and the ability to get a good education and good career. However, a lot of us don't take those rights by the reins and use them to become a great person and inspire other people. We have the right to a good education, but some people choose to drop out of school or not pay attention, and many blame it on our system of government. I must admit, though, that the United States needs some work - everywhere I look, there are people treating others harshly due to race of any kind or other issues. Although it's stated in the law that all of us are created equal, in the end, many of us end up not so equal because others abuse their rights. Ask yourself: is this true freedom?
--Amelia, 12
It means u can do what u want u want to do.

PBS how come sometimes a topic will say it is all filled up but then it will have more room again?

Message from IML: Hi Americangirl! Thats because every few weeks we reopen a question that was closed, just to give newer IMLers a chance to add their comments!
Freedom is a very important thing and everyone and everything should have it. But what does this mean. Freedom means you are free and are allowed to do whatever you want. That would be so cool.
--Jessica, 11
"I just read a Nelson Mandela book a couple years ago, and I thought: Wow! Blacks were treated like THAT?! They really are not that different from us. Nelson Mandela said: 'I have been enslaved, not been able to vote, interrogated, judged, and that is because of the colour of my skin. ' I am glad they are treated equally in America, but I pray that blacks shall insure harmony over the entire world for them. Maybe that will never happen, but it shall in heaven. Also, so many people have been confused over where Asian people are Chinese, Japanese, or north or South Korean. I may not be Asian, but I still am annoyed. If any black or Asian people are reading this, I just want to tell you: THINGS WILL GET STRAIGHTNED IN HEAVEN.

Believing in what you want to believe in saying what you want to say.
--Danielle, 12
I think freedom means that you can use YOUR money on what you want, cause, you earned it, right? I think it also means if you have a crush on someone your parents dont go Oh, youre too young.
--Kira, 10
Freedom is being able to love who you want and not have anything to hold you back. Not even your parents...
--Nicole, 11
Freedom means that everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and possessions, that no one can take them away or harm any one.
--JS, 13
Freedom is being able to stick your arms out and wiggle them. Freedom is being able to love everyone around you. Freedom is being able to keep going no matter what disability you may have.
--Kira, 12
I think freedom is being free to do what you want, but obeying the law while you are at it. I think it is being able to have any religion you want and I also think it means not having a country or a person ruling what you do, where you go, or how many kids you can have and stuff like that...
--Tabitha, 11
Freedom means that you have the ability and the guts to do whatever it takes to get to the top. You feel free...
--Donna, 11
I think freedom means you can have independence and you can make your own rules without someone ruling over you and after the fight you'll be free so you can make your own rules and make them be for the people and yourself too, maybe. But you won't have to deal with the fight that's in the past anymore because you are free and you can do what you wanted to do in the state you live in. You can also do what's right, too..
--Carly, 12
Freedom is when nobody judges you and everybody has fair rights. Freedom is when everyone loves you and respects you, no matter who or what you are. Freedom is when you don't have to prove yourself to others or protest against wars. Freedom is when peace is finally restored and nobody has to yell to get their words or feelings out. Freedom is when you can just be you.
--B, 11
I think freedom mean that we should be free to learn about god, or any other subject we please, (yes Im talking about school. ) I mean, it's just down right wrong that they teach everyone about evolution in school, but they don't teach you about god, I mean god is sooo much more important than learning that we came from apes! (which, we didn't. Just incase no one knew. ) we should we free to bring a bible to school, and share gods word with our friends! And our enemies.
--Brittany
My definition would be, to tell whether what is right from wrong, (if there really is a right and wrong) based on what you think and not what our forefathers told us...
--Vicky
Freedom means you can do the right things and be your religion and think your thoughts. We are so lucky to have this freedom, some people in other countries get in trouble for praising God or disliking leaders. I am proud to be an American!!!!!!!!
--Katherine, 12
Freedom is a word with so many meanings. To me it is TO BE SEPERATED FROM SOCIETY, FROM OTHERS YOUR WHOLE LIFE. There will always be a force that will hold you down, to tell you what is right and wrong, if it was not there, we are people of wrong-doings.
--Colette
I feel freedom means having the ability (And the responsibility) to help people!
--Michael, 13
I think Freedom means to be free and not having to always do as someone else says, and to be every part of you. I think it also means for the world to be fair and free, just like how we are supposed to be...
--Molly, 11
Freedom means you can choose to do what you want to do without getting punished (reasonably) in Afghanistan girls couldn't go to school leave their house or they could be beat or if you were a thief you had your hand cut off. They were under the rule of the Taliban until 2001. (to find out more you should read the breadwinner) They couldn't do what we do. You should be able to do anything you want as long as its legal. lol.
--Wars, 13
I think freedom is that people can do what they want.

"I think freedom means you have right to do what you feel is right, to be able to go somewhere without someone following you to hear your conversation with somebody, to be who you have always dreamed of being and not being judged or told what your future is, to be a one of a kind, and to help make the world a better place. And that is what I think freedom is. Thank you.

"Freedom means to save our country, support it, and just to love America.

"I think freedom means that we kids all have a right: a right to do what we feel is right, a right help someone in need and not have to ask for permission. Im not talking about voting or getting a job at age 10. No, Im talking about a right to decide what school we go to, how we dress, and even if we look stupid we can do it. And if what you do feels right, then it doesnt matter.
