Summer Camp
Discussion questions for kids to bring up with adults
Lately I’ve been thinking about going to day camp or sleepaway camp for the summer. Can we talk about it this?
Did you go to camp when you were a kid? If so, did you have fun? What kinds of things did you do at camp? Did you keep in touch with friends you made there?
How would you feel about me being away from home for a few days this summer? How about a few weeks? If you don’t think I’m ready for it, why not?
If you think it’s a good idea for me to go to camp, can I be involved in choosing which one to go to? Can we look for a camp that offers programs and activities that are important to me?
Just because I might feel homesick away from home doesn’t mean I’m not committed to going to camp. Can we talk about things that might make it easier for me to be away from you?
Also be sure to ask the camp director to describe the camp's philosophy as it relates to program, supervision, homesickness, and discipline; what type of safety and emergency procedures are in place; what kind of experience the camp director has; and especially, what kind of background checks are done on the camp staff.
