Making Money: From the Mentors

From Vanessa
After school during 4th and 5th grade, I made jewelry and sold it to family members. For my birthday I had received a bead jewelry kit from my aunt. I made one as a gift for my grandma and then began taking orders. It was very cool! I got my little cousins to work for me and keep a log. I sold key chains, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and anklets in all sort of designs. It went on for a while, but after a while people weren't interested anymore and I got bored. I never got an allowance so I had to try to be creative about making my own money. When I was in junior high, my cousin and I would spend weekends together coming up with business plans. One of our ideas was to make up our own card games and sell those to other cousins. I'm a strong believer in entrepreneurship and making your own money. Jobs are totally overrated because you work twice as hard as you get paid. At least with doing your own thing, you get out as much as you put in!
