"I think there is more school work. "
--Stevie, 12
"I am going into the 6th grade at my school and I'm afraid of what the other older kids will think."
--Dominique, 11
"It's different because you have more teachers and more classrooms. You also have a little amount of time to get to each of your classes."
--Jacinda, 11
"Middle school is way more fun. You get to know new people. Classes are harder, but some are very enjoyable, especially science. Science gets way better in middle school!"
--Katie, 13
"I'm not there yet. I have 1 month to go before I get to middle school, and I can't wait. I heard that middle is fun and cool, but I don't know yet. I have a bigger bro that is going on to 8th grade, and he doesn't talk much about school. So I have no idea what it is like. I am going to 7th grade so I am just new to the school. I wonder if we get swirlies and stuff like that?? I am one of the popular kids in elementary, so I wonder if I will be at middle school? I hope so. Are the teachers mean at middle school? I hope not. I can't wait to go and experience it. Oh yeah, I know for a fact that elementary school is boring. You have to stare at one teacher all day! I hope middle school isn't boring! That's all - got to fly! Bye!"
--Tayler, 12
"Middle schools have pools, and the elementary schools don't, so I say middle and high school are much better."
--Alejandra, 12
"I think the biggest difference between elementary and middle school is that you get to have more classes and extra classes like band (if you want). I was kind of annoyed that when our school went to visit the middle school; all of the older kids looked at us like we were aliens!"
--Gracie, 11
"Well middle school is different because there are lockers, you go to a different school, you switch classes, you have to make new friends, and you have more responsibilities. The best way to deal with it is to keep up with it and do all your homework and be yourself."
--Ruby, 11
"The difference is that in middle school you don't get recess."
--Karissa, 12
"I moved to a new place this summer, and I am kind of nervous. What if all the people don't like me or want be my friend. And I don't want to have mean teachers!"
--Rose, 11
"The school is big, and you don't know your way around. Well, I asked a 14-year-old; she was in all of the same classes as I was! Lockers, cool huh? You can express yourself in whatever way you want to! With pictures and what so ever. After all, I like MIDDLE SCHOOL."
--Ninea, 13
"Well, the biggest difference between elementary and middle school is that middle school has 6 classes, and elementary does not. Elementary is boring, and middle school is better than elementary. You get to meet other people who are like you who will become your really good friends."
--Giselle, 11
"I am in 7th grade now, but the biggest thing about it is responsibility. I mean, keeping track of the time so you won't be late and you won't get all the attention. The teachers have all kinds of other classes to deal with. The other thing is that you move around a lot in middle school, but in elementary school you sit in one spot all day. Now, you have to worry about all the school bullies. Well, thanks for hearing my opinion. Laters!"
--Vanessa, 13
"How do I know the right people to hang with?"
--Faith, 11
"The big thing about middle school is that you have to change classes all day! Also, you have a lot of homework to do in the same day! But it's still cool to buy lunch every day!"
--Jennifer, 9
"In elementary school, you have one class and one teacher, and they help you more. In middle school, you have five classes and five different teachers a day, and you're more on your own."
--Dosha
"The biggest difference is probably going to 6-8 classes a day in a huge school with kids you don't know. Friends always help you cope."
--Hannah, 13
"The biggest thing is that there are way more people and teachers. We have 12 teachers for one grade, and at my elementary school, we had 4 teachers for one grade. At middle school, they treat you more like a grown-up! I like that much better!"
--Kirstin, 11
"I'm not in middle school yet, but my sister always comes home saying, "We have a school store, a student council, an orchestra and band, and TGIF (a party thing at school that stands for 'Thank Goodness It's Friday'). We have lockers, and we have this, and we have that!" It is so annoying, but I can't wait to be in middle school!"
--Hannah, 8
"The biggest difference between elementary and middle school is that there are so many classes and books and LOCKERS! The best part is that you get out of school 1 hr before the lil' kids."
--Tonee, 12
"It's not that hard to deal with. The biggest difference is the number of classes. Instead of 1 or 2 classes, there are 6 in middle school. It's not very hard to get over. Actually, it's really fun being in middle school. I love it!!!"
--Stephanie, 11
"At my middle school, we have to watch 'Channel One' every morning. It's kind of boring but sometimes they have really cool people on the show."
--Lee, 12
"I just finished 5th grade, and I've discovered that middle school isn't all that different from elementary school. Besides, you get to pick some of your own subjects (which is so cool!). My old elementary school is being remodeled into a brand new middle school. I don't think middle school is scary. If you're not going with all your friends, it can be."
--Amanda, 11
"I think the best way to deal with it is by talking about your problems. I know it might be hard 'cause I have those problems too, but it's for the best! And the difference is that you get to know teachers, and they can be meaner."
--Mariana, 12
"The biggest difference is all the classes. The way I'm going to deal with it is to take one step at a time."
--Lizzy, 11
"Middle school is way more strict, but you get to do more things, and they have more choices."
--Stefanie, 11
"The biggest thing is new people, but you get used to it and you get a lot of new friends."
--Lilly, 13
"Don't worry. I've been through 6th grade at the middle school. It's not too bad! Just make sure you do your homework!"
--Andrea, 12
"Middle school seems like it will be totally different and weird compared to elementary school. That's what I thought, too, but it's really not that weird after the first two days! Well good luck and enjoy your year! Have fun! P.S. Stay organized too! : ) "
--Andrea, 12
"Where I live, when you are in 7th grade that's when middle school starts. Well, I hear that the 8th graders call the 7th graders 'Sevies.' Do they call 7th graders around the world that?"
--Tayler, 12
"Well, on my first day of middle school, it wasn't so bad, but I couldn't get my locker open! One of my friends helped me, and I figured it out. Middle school is harder than elementary but more fun! Changing classes is great. I love it! You have your own desk and your own locker; it's really cool! The teachers are a lot stricter than the elementary ones, but if you treat them nicely they'll treat you the same way! Now I'm going to 7th grade and I hope that I have a blast, and I hope you do too by reading this message."
--Kari, 12
"I really like middle school because the day goes by so much faster than in elementary school. Also because you have to change classes every 45 minutes."
--Eliza, 12
"My middle school starts in 6th grade, the grade I am now entering. I've seen the school, and I think one big difference is the size! At my old school, I knew every nook and cranny like the back of my hand. I'll probably need a map of the school on the first day!"
--Kelly, 11
"The biggest difference between grammar school and middle school is that you are at the right age to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. The best way to handle it is to get that special person not for their looks but for their personality."
--Tiara, 11
"Middle school is tough. I know it because I was in 6th grade twice. You have 6 subjects in middle school, so you need lots of notebooks, pens, pencils, and lots of brain!"
--Melissa, 13
"I think the biggest difference is the number of friends you can make!"
--Brianna, 12
"The biggest difference is that there's better food! And the other big difference is the library. There's many more books. It's way cooler!"
--Marissa, 12
"The biggest difference between elementary and middle school is going to your locker and not being late for school."
--Jessica, 11
"In middle school, everyone has crushes and the boyfriend/girlfriend thing going on. Sometimes kids even kiss! Gross! I like the boyfriend/girlfriend part but not the kissing!"
--Kirstin, 11
"My middle school is so different. In my town, middle school is 5th and 6th and junior high is 7th and 8th! I am going into 6th grade! I love middle school! And now I am going to be the top dog! There is so much more at middle school like student council, a school store, lockers, more classes, orchestra, band, and much much more. I love middle school!!"
--Kirstin, 11
"I think the biggest difference is that you start blaming yourself for stuff about your body."
--Shannon, 12
"The difference is more subjects, and each subject gets harder. If you make a schedule you won't miss or fail any classes."
--Samantha, 12
"The biggest difference is that you get treated like an older, more responsible person. You have more responsibilities and there are more classes to deal with, and you have a lot of trouble getting used to it. You can deal with it by asking an older person about what it was like, and they can help you out."
--Alysia, 12
"I'm scared to go to middle school. What should I do? I tried to talk to kids that are already in middle school. I am an mg (mentally gifted) child, so people act like they are my friends so they will get good grades. I'm afraid they might do that in middle school. I'm so scared."
--B.J., 11
"I am about to enter middle school in September. I was just wondering what you do if your first period is almost at the front of school and second period is like way to the end of the school and you get there late. Do they give you detention?"
--Jessica, 11
"Well, I think the biggest thing that is different between elementary and middle school is the peer pressure. I mean when I was in 7th grade, at a junior high school, it was hard because all the kids would make fun of me. They would say things like, 'You are too short to be in the 7th grade.' I think this is the biggest difference because as you get older, there is more peer pressure on you."
--Amber
"Well, bigger kids, more class, more homework, harder homework, and different subjects."
--Ariana, 11
"I think one of the biggest differences is that in elementary you are always with your friends, and you know that they will be in the same class next year. When you get into middle school, there are so many more kids, and well, you don't know for sure if you are going to be with your best friend. Luckily for me, I had my best friend in every class I took, but it doesn't happen to everyone. So you have to be ready to make new friends, but that's not a bad thing."
