Cross country is the skiing version of sprinting, running and jogging. A skier races short, medium-length and long distances over snow in a competitive race.
The skier uses long strides as well as arm strength, pushing off with poles, to travel over mostly flat, snow-covered land. Cross country races range from quick sprints to longer races of almost 12 miles.
The skier who finishes the race first, or with the fastest race time, wins.
Cross country skis – these skis are designed for travelling quickly over snow in a race. They are about six feet in length and three inches in width
Poles – skiers use poles and their arm strength to push themselves faster in a race
Wax – sometimes spread on the bottom of skis to help them move faster over the snow
Toque – a winter hat worn to keep the racer warm
