Swimming is a sport in which swimmers race each other in a pool of water.
Swimmers race competitors in a pool. Races have various lengths. Swimmers may be part of a team as well, and a team will earn points based on the finishes of these athletes. Typical race lengths include 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres. Swimmers also compete in different race styles, or styles of arm movements, including the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke.
In races the swimmer with the fastest time wins. As in the Olympics, swimming often provides gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three finishers. In team competitions, a team will earn points based on the finishes of its swimmers, and the team with the most points wins.
