Bea & Mrs. Jones

Language: English

A kindergartner and her father change places for a day. Bea works in an office and her father goes to school. This video is about how people sometimes wish they were someone else. LeVar uses the costumes from Reading Rainbow to dress up like people he has always wanted to be, and points out the importance of being ourselves and striving to be all we can be.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Clowning Around

It’s fun for your child to pretend to be another character, such as a clown.

To make a clown disguise, you will need:
• paper plate
• scissors
• crayons
• glue
• construction paper
• decorations such as yarn, cotton balls, buttons, balloon, candy corn or miniature marshmallows
• tape craft stick

1. Help your child cut two eye holes in a paper plate.
2. Draw and color a clown face.
3. Add face decorations if you wish: hair made from construction paper strips, yarn, or cotton balls; a nose made from a large button or a small blown-up balloon; teeth made from candy corn or miniature marshmallows.
4. Tape a craft stick to the back of the plate for a handle.

Now your child is ready to clown around.

Variation: In place of the clown face, encourage your child to create any character mask they wish.

Playing Dressup

Playing dressup in some of your mom or dad’s old clothes can be lots of fun. First you have to have permission! Then you can put on their old t-shirt, or dress, or suit jacket and pretend to be just like them. You can model your clothes in front of a mirror, or even have a style show if you have several in your family or some neighbors that can do this too. Play clothes can add a lot to your playtime activities. Have fun….but be sure to ask an adult before you borrow their clothing.

Take Your Child to Work

Have you ever taken your child to your work place for a day? It might be a good experience for both of you to share a day on the job. It will help your child to better understand what it is that you do when you are away from home and help them to be more interested in your work. It also makes a child feel included in all parts of your life. Think about it. See if it could work for you.
