Hot Air Henry

Language: English

A sassy Siamese cat stows away on a hot-air balloon and ends up taking a fur raising flight across the mountains. LeVar experiences a colorful and exciting expedition in a hot-air balloon. He takes viewers to a hot-air ballooning event, then provides a comical look into the past at some flying machines that never made it off the ground. Finally, LeVar visits the National Space Camp where kids find out what it takes to become an astronaut.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Water-Filled Balloons

Try having some family backyard fun with water-filled balloons.
Fill balloons with water to play dodgeball, water ball tag, volley ball over a clothesline, or water ball baseball. Create your own game using one or more water-filled balloons. Better wear a bathing suit!

Opposites

What is the opposite of hot? — cold

Think of the opposites of this list of words
Top – , Hot –
Soft – , Dark –
Slim – , Big –
Can you think of any others?

Ring Glider

Many early flying machines failed to get off the ground. See if you can make this simple flying machine work!

You will need:

  • plastic drinking straw
  • scissors
  • 2 paper clips
  • construction paper
  1. Cut one strip that is 1 ½ inches x 11 inches.
  2. Cut one strip that is ¾ x 11 inches.
  3. Place one paper clip into the end of the straw with the larger wire loop inside the straw. Put the second paper clip into the other end of the straw in the same manner
  4. Fold the narrower strip in half and form into a loop with the ends overlapping. Attach the loop to one of the paper clips.
  5. Do the same with the wider strip.

Your flying machine should look like this:

Now it’s time to test your flying machine to see how it works. Good luck! After taking a few test flights, adjust the size of the larger loop. Pull the inside end of the loop to make it smaller. Does it make a difference?
