Ox-Cart Man

Language: English

The feature book describes the day-to-day life of an early 19th–century New England family throughout the year. LeVar is inspired by the story to visit Old Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts, and a hands-on living museum where he discovers what life was like in the early 1800’s. He learns about training oxen, blacksmithing, bartering, and early printing methods.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Build a Covered Wagon

Wagons were the most valuable means of transportation when the Ox-Cart Man lived. When people traveled long distances, their “moving van” was a covered wagon.

To make a miniature covered wagon, you will need:

  • small box
  • buttons
  • glue
  • pipe cleaners
  • tape
  • white tissue paper
  • scissors
  1. Glue buttons on the box for wagon wheels.
  2. Shape three or four pipe cleaners to make a frame for the wagon cover. Tape them inside the box.
  3. Put a small amount of glue along the outside edge of each pipe cleaner. Place the tissue paper over the pipe cleaners.
  4. Once the glue has dried, trim the tissue paper.
  5. People who lived during the time of the Ox-Cart Man had to make things they needed. Use your covered wagon to store small, handmade objects.

Historically Speaking

Plan a family outing to a local historical museum to discover information about the history of the town or city where you live. Try to find old postcards that show what your community looked like a century ago. Many towns and cities have walking tours. Get the information you need and take the tour with your family. Check out buildings that have a history. Discover why they were originally constructed.
