Animal Cafe

Language: English

Maxwell found that the food on his shop shelves had vanished overnight, and his cash register was “stuffed full of money.” This made him wonder what really happens during the middle of the night! In the episode, LeVar takes viewers to New York City, where they discover that while some people are sleeping, others are just beginning their day.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Bake a Batch of Moons and Stars

Bakers work at night so that all those tasty cookies, rolls, breads, and bagels are ready for store shelves bright and early each morning.

You will need:

  • refrigerator cookie dough
  • baking sheets
  • star cookie cutter
  • candles

Cut slices of refrigerator cookie dough and shape like crescent moons. Use a cookie cutter to shape others like stars. Use small candies to add eyes. Bake according to the package directions.

Hand Shadows

All you need is a light source, your hands, and a wall to create all sorts of wonderful shadow characters. For each shadow a family member creates, have everyone join in to tell a story about it. A few examples:

Busy Nighttime Animals

Take a family trip to your local library to hunt for books about animals that are nocturnal--busy at night. See what you can find out about owls, raccoons, porcupines, frogs, bats, moths, fireflies, and other animals that are very busy during nighttime hours.

Plan a Nighttime Outing
After all that reading, plan a family outing at night to visit a museum, go to a show, camp in your backyard, go star gazing, or have dinner in your favorite café.

Check out some of these books on your
next trip to the library:

  • The Moon by Robert Louis Stevenson
  • The Dream Eater by Christian Garrison
  • Night Markets: Bringing Food To A City by Joshua Horwitz
