Watch The Stars Come Out

This story is about a little girl and her brother who bravely travel alone across the ocean to join their mama and papa in a strange new land—called America. Viewers visit Ellis Island, the port of entry into America for millions of immigrants who came with hopes and dreams—and see footage of immigrants arriving. A.J. Annello, who works for the company that restored the Statue of Liberty, gives LeVar a tour and tells about why and how Lady Liberty has been restored.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Wish Upon a Star

You will need:

  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • glitter glue
  • marker
  • thread
  • tape
  1. Cut a star from construction paper for each member of the family.
  2. Have each family member write one wish on the star. Decorate with glitter glue.
  3. Use tape to attach a length of thread to each star and suspend from the ceiling or curtain rods in a favorite family room.
    May all your wishes come true!!
  

From Squares to Stars

A fold and a snip is all it takes to change a square sheet of paper into a five-pointed star.

You will need:

  • a square of paper
  • scissors
  1. Fold a paper square in half.
  2. Fold over the right side
  3. Fold up the bottom left corner.
  4. Fold over the right side to meet the left side.
  5. Snip on the red line.
  6. Open.
