Imogene’s Antlers

Language: English

Imogene wakes up one morning shocked to find a pair of antlers growing out of her head, and embarks on a comical adventure to discover practical uses for this new condition. LeVar takes a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo to explore why animal looks and shapes are important to how they live. He also discovers the difference between horns and antlers. A bird specialist introduces viewers to unique birds; then string band members, who dress in feathers for the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, show off their costumes and routine.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

O, Deer!

This is one idea for having young children create an animal with antlers.

You will need:

  • lightweight cardboard or posterboard
  • brown paper bag
  • scissors
  • construction paper and glue
  1. Draw a triangle on posterboard like this one and help your child cut it out.
  2. Have your child trace the triangle on a brown paper bag, cut it out, and glue it on the cardboard triangle. This is the deer’s head.
  3. Have your child place both hands on another piece of brown paper bag while another family member traces around them.
  4. Have your child cut out the two hand shapes and glue them along the shortest side of the triangle. These are the deer’s antlers.
  5. To finish the deer, your child can cut ears, eyes, and a nose from construction paper and glue them onto the deer.

What a Story!

Talk with your child about what it would be like to wake up in the morning and find that you had grown an elephant’s trunk, a monkey’s tail or some other animal part.

Provide an old photograph of your child and glue it onto drawing paper. Using crayons or markers, have your child draw the animal part on the photo to discover what they would look like. Under the photo, your child can write a story to tell what they would do and how they would feel with such an animal feature.
