The Life Cycle Of The Honeybee

Language: English

This book describes in simple terms the life cycle of the honeybee. LeVar dons bee-proof clothing and investigates a beehive with a beekeeper. Viewers learn how honey is removed from the comb and readied for market, how bees pollinate flowers, how a new beehive is started and how important the queen bee is to a well-organized hive.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Fancy Flowers

You will need:

  • tissue paper of various colors
  • pipe cleaners
  • scissors

For each flower:

  1. Bend one end of a pipe cleaner to form a hook. Set aside.
  2. Cut six 4-inch squares of tissue paper. Start at one end of each square and fold back and forth accordion-style. Make each pleat about ½ inch wide. Ask someone to hold each pleated square as you finish and begin the next one.
  3. Stack the six pleated squares and place them inside the hook of the pipe cleaner. Tightly twist the hook around the center of the stack.
  4. To finish the flower, separate the pleats and fan out to form a flower.

Guarding the Honeypot

This is a fun game for the youngest members of your family and their friends.

You will need:

  • a chair
  • scarf as a blindfold
  • rolled-up newspaper
  • plastic bowl
  • jingle bells
  1. Players sit in a circle on the floor. One person is “Bear” and sits in the center on a chair. Bear wears a blindfold. The jingle bells are put in the plastic bowl and placed under the chair. This is “Bear’s honeypot.”
  2. One at a time the players try to sneak up to Bear’s chair to steal the honeypot. Bear can stop them by tapping them with the rolled-up newspaper, in which case the player returns to his or her seat in the circle, and the next player tries. If a player succeeds, then that person becomes Bear and a new game begins. Remind players to be quiet so Bear can hear them.
