Best Friends

Language: English | Español

Kathy feels lonely and afraid when her best friend goes away for the summer and leaves her alone. She finds a dog that becomes a best friend and learns about the love and care pets need. LeVar explores how seeing-eye dogs are trained to act as eyes for the blind and meets a young girl who has spent a year raising a dog that will be trained to help a visually impaired person.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Make Puppy Chow

There are parts of this recipe that ADULTS need to do while children watch.

Measure and put in a saucepan:

  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1 package (12 oz.) of chocolate chips
  • 1 cup peanut butter

Spread in a large flat pan:

  • 1 box (12 oz.) Rice Chex cereal

This is the ADULT part….
Melt butter, chocolate chips and peanut butter together and mix well. Pour the melted mixture over the cereal, stirring it until the cereal is evenly coated. Put powdered sugar in a paper bag and add the coated cereal.

Have your child shake the bag well and pour it into a bowl. The “puppy chow” is ready to eat!!

Make a Friendship Scrapbook

What you will need:

  • cardboard or a grocery sack
  • recycled computer paper or newsprint magazines to cut up
  • markers or crayons

Discuss with your child all the types of friends they have such as school friends, neighborhood friends, family friends, animal friends, book friends, imaginary friends, and so on. Talk about the friends they’ll want to include in their scrapbook.

Create a scrapbook cover out of cardboard or paper grocery sack, and use newsprint or recycled computer paper for the pages.

Draw a picture, or make a collage on the cover. Then draw pictures of friends on the pages, or cut pictures from magazines to represent friends and paste them in the scrapbook.

Write or dictate to someone who will write a sentence about each of the friends by their picture in the scrapbook.

Read the book together often.
