Meanwhile Back At The Ranch

Language: English | Español

Looking for some diversion, a bored Rancher Hicks drives to town not knowing that he will miss a very eventful, surprise-filled day back at the ranch. LeVar visits Old Tucson, an authentic western town, and gets a taste of western life as a cowboy when he dons true western garb, complete with spurs, chaps, and an official ten-gallon hat. Viewers meet a talented stuntwoman who demonstrates rope tricks and thrilling stunts on horseback.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Branded Bandanas

Each ranch has its own special identifying mark or “brand.” Here are a few examples:

Just for fun, have your family create its own “brand.” Then make a bandana for each child in the family, featuring the brand.

You will need:

  • squares of fabric or large handkerchiefs
  • crayons
  • brown paper bags
  • iron (used by an adult)

  1. Play around designing brands until you have one that represents your family.
  2. On a clean piece of cloth or large handkerchief, have your child use crayon to draw the brand on the fabric. Your child can repeat the brand several times, using a different color crayon each time.
  3. Layer brown paper bags on your ironing board, followed by the bandana, and topped with another sheet of brown paper.
  4. Using the cotton setting (no steam), an adult can press over the top sheet of brown paper. The heat will slightly melt the crayon into the fabric.
  5. When cool, the bandana is ready to wear around the neck. Wear your bandana to participate in a BICYCLE RODEO with your friends.

Bicycle Rodeo

To get a taste of western life in your own neighborhood, plan a bicycle rodeo with your friends.

Try these events on your bikes:
Slow Go: Mark off start and finish lines and lines for lanes. Then see which rider can go the slowest while still maintaining balance on a two-wheeler. Allow little tykes on tricycles to have their own contest.

Wavy Ride: Create a wavy path by using chalk to draw a pair of wavy lines that each rider must stay inside and avoid having feet touch the ground.

Ball Drops: Place a basket midway alongside a straight track. Give each rider a small ball which must be dropped in basket as it is passed by. No stopping, no putting feet down, or traveling outside the lines!

Rope the Steer: Blow up a large balloon, draw the head of a steer on it, and secure it to the ground. Give each rider a hoop (could be a plastic hoop or one fashioned from cardboard). The object is to drop the hoop over the “steer” as you pass by.

Continue the rodeo fun by creating other events to challenge your cyclists!
