My Little Island

Language: English

A young boy takes his best friend to visit the little Caribbean Island, Montserrat, where he was born. As LeVar tours this same beautiful island and visits the open market, viewers are able to experience the many colors, sights and sounds of this tropical paradise, including the unique flowers, vegetables, fruits and music. He even goes on a “mountain chicken” hunt.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Island Chase

Your children and their friends will enjoy this game of “catch me if you can!”

You will need:

  • large cardboard box
  • scissors
  • paints and brushes
  1. Cut off the sides of the box for the children.
  2. Have the children then draw and color an island shape on each sheet of cardboard.
  3. Have them paint each island shape and then help them cut out the shapes.

To play chase:

  • Scatter the islands over your playing field. Appoint one person as the “sea serpent” who tries to catch the others. The only safe places are the islands, but only one player is allowed on an island at one time.
  • The object of the game is to fun from the “sea serpent” without being caught. When the “sea serpent” catches a player, then that player becomes the serpent and playing continues.

Off to the Races

You will need:

  • paper
  • scissors
  • markers or crayons
  • corks
  • toothpicks
  • pan of water
  • drinking straws

To make each mini boat:
.

  1. Cut a small paper sail from paper and decorate using crayons or markers
  2. Push a toothpick through the paper sail and then into a cork to make a sailboat.

For boat races:

  1. Fill a large pan with water and place all the boats on one side.
  2. When given a signal, each boat owner uses a drinking straw to blow the boat across the pan. The first one to reach the other side is the winner.
To make the race more difficult, have the boats race round trip.
