The Purple Coat

Language: English

Every year Gabby’s grandfather, a tailor, makes her a new blue coat. Despite her mother’s reminder that “navy blue is what you always get,” Gabby begs her grandfather to make her a beautiful purple fall coat. LeVar takes viewers to the Fashion Institute of Technology and to New York City’s garment district to explore the fascinating world of clothing design, where he gets a coat made especially for him. Viewers also meet an artist who creates caricatures of people out of papier mâché.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Sewing Pictures

You will need:

  • shirt cardboard
  • scissors
  • markers
  • hole punch
  • yarn
  • tape

Directions:

Use the scissors to cut the shirt cardboard into the shape of a coat or other shape your child would like.

Have your child use the markers to color the cardboard shape

Punch holes around the edge of the shape and as far into the center as possible.

Wrap tape around one end of a length of yarn for easy threading.

Now your child is ready to thread the yarn in and out to “sew” around the shape.

Paper People Puppets

You will need:

  • heavy paper
  • scissors
  • clothing catalogs
  • glue
  • drinking straws
  • tape
  1. Cut several “people shapes” from heavy paper. If you have a large gingerbread man cookie cutter, trace around it.
  2. Have your children hunt through clothing catalogs to cut out faces and clothing to glue onto each cutout.
  3. To make stick puppets, use tape to attach a drinking straw to the back of each paper person.
  4. Have a puppet show with the paper people.
