Dive To The Coral Reefs

Language: English

This feature book describes the formation of coral reefs and the many plants and animals that live in and around these underwater communities. LeVar is inspired by the book to learn more about the world of coral reefs, so he dons diving gear and gives viewers a tour of the National Marine Sanctuary, an underwater park in Florida. Viewers also meet a “reef doctor” who shows how he restores life to damaged reefs by transplanting living coral.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Mini Aquarium

Your children can make their own mini underwater community. This is what they need:

  • clean, clear plastic food container with attached lid
  • thread
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • crayons or markers
  1. Find a clear plastic food container that has the lid attached such as those found at fresh salad bars in your local grocery store. This will be the aquarium.
  2. To make the inhabitants of the aquarium, have your child draw, color, and cut out pictures of coral, fish, and other sea creatures. Make them small enough to fit inside the plastic container.
  3. Cut out each sea creature and use tape to attach a length of thread for hanging. To suspend each sea creature, turn the container on its side and tape the other end of the thread to the inside opening of the container. Tape pictures of coral along the top and bottom.
  4. With the container turned on its side, the sea creatures will dangle down as if swimming.

Tongue Twisters!

Try to say these sea-worthy tongue twisters three times, as fast as you can, without making any mistakes!

  • Flip, the flat flounder flops and floats.
  • Sheila sells seashells by the seashore.
  • On Tuesday, Timmy Turtle told two tall tales to Tommy.
  • Swifty Sal swims, swoops, sways, and swirls deep in the sea.
  • Sleepy Slick Snake slipped on slimy, slippery seaweed.
