Sports Pages

Language: English

This feature book is filled with poems about the experiences and feelings of young athletes involved in various sports. LeVar shares his own enthusiasm for athletics as he takes viewers from sport to sport—including soccer, basketball, ice skating, swimming, and gymnastics. The emotions and feelings are explored when viewers meet a variety of young athletes, including U.S. Olympic Team gymnasts, and a brother and sister who skate together for the Olympics.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Indoor Tennis Racket

You will need:

  • old nylon stocking
  • wire coat hanger
  • masking tape
  • scissors
  • aluminum foil

Directions:

  1. Bend the shoulders of the hanger into an oval-shaped frame. Straighten the hook to form a wire handle.
  2. Pull a nylon stocking over the oval frame.
  3. Cut off the extra stocking that hangs below the end of the handle.
  4. Wrap masking tape around and around the stocking and the wire handle to form a padded handle.
  5. Make a ball out of aluminum foil and bounce it on your racket.
  6. Ask an adult if you can use this inside of the house, as long as you promise to be very careful.

Hula Hoopsters

Hang a hulahoop from a tree branch or clothesline. Using a basketball or smaller ball, youngsters can take a shot from either side, or even play catch through the hoop.

Air Pool

For this game, tape a small plastic berry basket to the outer edge of each of the four corners of a card table, making them to look like the pockets of a pool table. Give each player a drinking straw to use as a cue. To play, children place cotton balls on the table and blow through the straw to move each ball into a basket.
