The Bicycle Man

Language: English

In a small village in Japan, two American soldiers do amazing tricks on a borrowed bicycle. In the video LeVar goes on to explore the world of wheels and shows how they keep us rolling along—from bicycles and skateboards — to scooters, rollerblades, and human-powered vehicles.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Fun with Wheels

You will need:

  • round plastic lids, cardboard circles, round Tinkertoys
  • small cartons, boxes, newspapers, construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • pipe cleaners
  • twist ties

Directions:

Using a variety of materials, see if you can create a new kind of vehicle that can move along a flat surface. Involve different family members in making vehicles, and then see ways they are alike and how they are different.

Circle Pictures

Now that you have found lots of circles around your house, maybe you would like to make a picture using only circles! Use scraps of construction paper, wrapping or plain paper, fabric, and glue to make your own collage of lots and lots and lots of circles!

Shapes

Wheels are shaped like a circle. Look around your house and see what other things are made from circles, such as buttons, door handles, glasses, plates clocks, and so on. Write down names of all the things you can find that have a circle shape.

Option: After you are finished with circles try doing the same thing with squares, rectangles, and triangles. How long were your lists? Which shapes did you find the most often?
