Sunken Treasure

Language: English

A hurricane off the coast of Florida in 1662 caused the Atocha, a Spanish galleon, to sink. This book describes the many-years-long search for the treasure believed to be on it. An old treasure map leads LeVar on an exciting treasure hunt. He uses every device known to man to find the treasure—including a bloodhound. Then it is on to the most famous shipwreck in history—the Titanic. Viewers meet Dr. Robert Ballard, who tells how he found the Titanic wreckage and the equipment he developed and used to find it.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Yo, Ho, Ho Flags

Every pirate ship has a flag that was used as a way to identify the ship. The young pirates in your home may want to make flags of their own for their rooms.

Your will need:

  • piece of cloth (an old sheet can make several flags or an old pillow case can be cut into two large or four small flags)
  • colorful markers
  • long cardboard tubes or wooden dowels (or branches from outdoors)
  • masking tape
  1. Cut flags from cloth.
  2. Children can use markers to draw symbols on the flag.
  3. Use masking tape to attach the flag to a cardboard tube, wooden dowel, or branch.

Party with the Pirates

If a young member of the family is about to have a birthday, why not plan a party using a pirate theme. Create a cake that looks like a ship; have party favors using gummy fish and goldfish crackers; plan a treasure hunt with a map that leads to a treasure chest loaded with foil-wrapped chocolate coins; and provide the supplies for each mini- pirate to create his or her own pirate flag and hat to take home.

Bubble Prints

Prints from bubbles make an unusual art activity.
You will need:

  • newspaper
  • bowls
  • liquid tempera paint
  • liquid detergent
  • straws
  • white and colored construction paper

Directions:

  1. Cover your work area with newspaper pages.
  2. In a bowl, combine liquid tempera paint with a small amount of liquid detergent. Using a straw, blow into the mixture until bubbles extend over the rim of the bowl.
  3. Quickly place a sheet of white construction paper over the top of the bowl. Then remove the paper and let the resulting “bubble print” dry.
  4. For double bubble fun, repeat the procedure several times using a variety of paint colors.
  5. Mount the dried bubble prints on larger sheets of colored construction paper.
