Alistair’s Time Machine

Language: English

Alistair’s entry in a science competition takes him to many places and time periods, but unfortunately he can’t prove this to the judges. During the video LeVar takes viewers to see creative inventions that “made it” and many that didn’t “make it.”

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Inventions!

Creating a new game can be great fun!

Collect materials such as these:
• Straws, boxes, cardboard rolls, spools, boxes, scraps of wood, foil, beads, buttons, styrofoam, margarine tubs, string, yarn, tape, scrap paper, markers, crayons and any other items you can think of!

Directions:
Using some or all of these materials, create a new game. When you are finished explain it to friends or family members.
Here’s an example of a game you can make with some of the stuff listed above.

Roly-Poly Game

You will need:

  • 3 box lids of different sizes
  • three or more round beads or marbles
  • scissors
  • glue
  1. Take the middle-size lid and cut an opening in each side.
  2. Glue the middle size lid (top side down) inside the largest lid.
  3. Cut a side opening in the smallest lid and glue it in the center (top side up). Place the beads or marbles inside the largest lid.

If you are confused, just look at the drawing:

The object of the game is to get all the beads or marbles in the center box, the Home.

Making Invisible Ink

You will need:

  • bottled lemon juice
  • thin paintbrush or a cotton swab
  • paper (avoid shiny paper)

Note: Adult supervision is required for this activity!

Directions:

  1. Dip a paintbrush or cotton swab in the lemon juice and write a message on paper.
  2. Allow the lemon juice to dry.
  3. When the message is dry, have someone try to read it. To make the message appear, hold the paper over a light bulb. Heat does the trick! Or you can iron the paper, using the setting for “cotton.”
