Snowy Day: Stories And Poems

Language: English

This book is a collection of stories and poems with snow as a common theme. LeVar travels to Jackson Hole, Wyoming where viewers experience a variety of ways to beat winter’s chills and enjoy the thrills. Playing in the snow, constructing a snow person, riding in a horse sleigh and snowshoe hiking are a few of the things LeVar does in the snow. This episode also takes viewers to Alaska to find out about the Iditarod—a famous dog sled race.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Coconut Snowballs

You will need:

  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 2 cups chopped dried apricots (or another dried fruit)
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoons toasted wheat germ
  • 4 tablespoons dry milk
  • 4 tablespoons honey

Directions:

  1. Measure ¾ cup coconut into a bowl. Put aside ¼ cup in a smaller bowl.
  2. Add the chopped apricots to the coconut.
  3. Add lemon juice, wheat germ, dry milk, and honey, and mix well.
  4. Roll the mixture into small balls.
  5. Roll each ball in the saved coconut and place on wax paper to air-dry several hours

Who Can Resist Snow?

Whether you live in an area that experiences snow or not, your children will find this art project irresistible.
You will need:

  • white drawing paper
  • crayons
  • white tempera paint and paintbrush
  • water
  1. Have your child use crayon to color a scene on white paper. Urge your child to color heavily and leave some places on the background paper bare.
  2. Once the coloring is done, have your child paint a thin coat of white paint over the entire scene. Thin the white paint with water so it washes over the crayon easily. The result will be a snowy scene.

Poem

Have you ever seen the snow or played in it? Write a poem about a snowy day to share with a friend or family member.

Snow Prints

Use a bell pepper to make prints that resemble snowflakes.
You will need:

  • bell peppers
  • table knife
  • white paint in a pan
  • dark colored construction paper
  1. Cut each pepper in half across the width.
  2. Have your child carefully clean out the seeds without disturbing the pulp.
  3. Pour thinned white tempera in flat pan.
  4. Your child can dip the cut side of the pepper into the paint and then press on the dark-colored construction paper
  5. Does each print resemble a snowflake?
