Sophie And Lou

Language: English

This is the story of Sophie, a shy mouse who sets out to learn on her own after she is enticed by the dancing that she sees in the studio across the street. LeVar masters some fancy footwork as he learns some new dances—the mambo and hip hop. Then viewers are taken across the world (including Bali, Ireland, and Australia) to look at the many cultural differences there are in dance.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Hop, Hop, Scotch…

You will need:

  • chalk
  • place marker (shell, stone, beanbag)

Or if playing inside:

  • masking tape

Directions:

  1. Make a hopscotch pattern outdoors on the cement with chalk, or indoors on the floor with masking tape.
  2. The form should look similar to this:
  3. The first player stands behind the line and throws a marker into square
  4. The player must hop directly to square 2, then continue by hopping in one box or jumping in two, depending on how the game is set up. The player travels to 10, turns around and continues until 1 is reached.
  5. When the end is reached, the player must stand on one foot and bend down to retrieve the marker, and then hop out.
  6. The player continues by throwing the marker into square 2.

A player loses a turn whenever he or she:

  • Misses the square aimed for with the marker.
  • Steps on a line or in a square with a marker in it.
  • Puts 2 feet down in a single box or at the wrong time.

NOTE: If there are too many markers in squares to make it impossible for a player to pass, “temporary” boxes can be drawn next to the occupied ones with a broken line.

ANOTHER NOTE: If a player is losing balance while bending over to retrieve a marker, he or she can avoid being out by yelling “Butterfingers!” before touching the ground with a hand to regain balance. Then the player is not out and can try again!

Gotta Dance!

Get the whole family up on their feet and do free-form dancing! There are no rules, just move any way you want to the music. You can sway, wave your arms, take giant or tiny steps. Just let the music tell your body how to move. Add to the fun by holding crepe-paper streamers or scarves when you dance. Use a variety of music to dance by: fast, slow, rock-and-roll, rap, new age, country, and even classical!

MAKE YOUR OWN MUSIC by attaching jingle bells to a cord and tying them around each ankle. Then with each movement, you create your own music!

The Shy Mouse

You will need:

  • drawing paper
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • pencils, markers and crayons

Directions:

  1. Use construction paper to cut out the shape of a small mouse like Sophie.
  2. Talk with your child about his or her favorite part of the story and make a picture of it.
  3. Tell you child to glue the mouse where it fits into the picture.
