Through Moon And Stars And Night Skies

Language: English

A young boy remembers coming to this country to be adopted. He remembers how unfamiliar and frightening some things were in his new home, before he accepted the love to be found there. This tender story about a family formed through adoption leads LeVar to explore the variety of ways families are created—the Harris family has 2 children, both adopted; the Peck family is a single mother and 9 adopted children; the Abney family is a set of parents, 2 brothers and an adopted sister. Viewers learn that families are really created by love.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Home Sweet Home

Materials you will need:

  • aluminum pie plates
  • nail and hammer
  • board
  • paper
  • marker
  • tape
  • glue gun
  • soda-can pop-top ring

Directions:

  1. Put board on a tabletop or workbench to protect the surface.
  2. From the paper, cut a circle that will fit inside the pie plate. Draw a design on the paper with a marker. (The message could be “Home Sweet Home,” “Welcome to Our Home,” or whatever you would like.)
  3. Tape the paper to the inside of the pie plate.
  4. Use a nail to punch out the design. Tap on the hammer just enough for the point of the nail to go through the tin.
  5. To hang, use a glue gun to attach a soda can pop-top ring to the back of the plate

Option:
To make your hanging fancier, glue lace or fabric trim around the edge. You can also make a fabric bow and glue it on.

Family Coat of Arms

It would be interesting to find out if your family has a coat of arms. There are books and websites that provide information on genealogy and heraldic symbols for you to discover. But in the meantime, why not have your family create their own coat of arms? Plan together what it would be.

  • Choose a family animal. One that stands for all of you.
  • Choose a family symbol…a flower, a sword, a flag, a seashell?
  • Choose your family colors, at least two, maybe three.
  • Now incorporate your family animal, symbol, and colors into a design.
  • Cut a shield from posterboard. Work together to draw and color your family crest. Label the crest with your family name. Display it in a prominent place in your home, and be proud!
