And Still The Turtle Watched

Language: English

A turtle carved in rock many years ago by Native Americans watched the river below. In the span of time it observes many ecological changes with a great deal of sadness. In the video, LeVar takes viewers on a historical journey from the first settlers in this country to the present, and explores our responsibility to care for the earth. Scientists show how they care for and raise nearly extinct bald eagles and release them into their natural habitat.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Leaf Rubbings

Material you will need:

  • leaves of different shapes and sizes
  • heavy, white drawing paper
  • crayons

Directions:

  1. Put one or more leaves on a table with the smooth side down.
  2. Place a sheet of drawing paper on top of the leaf or leaves.
  3. Gently rub the side of a crayon back and forth across the paper to get the imprint of the leaf.
  4. Continue the process, using different leaves and a variety of crayon colors.

Options:

  1. Make a fall collage by cutting out the leaf rubbings, poking holes in them and hanging them from a stick.
  2. Make a cardboard frame covered with twigs to go around your rubbing design. Use glue to attach small twigs to the cardboard.

Turtle Time!

You can make your very own turtle to have in your room. Just find a rock that is about the right size for the turtle you want. Look for a smooth one. Then with some construction paper (best if you could have brown and/or green), cut out four legs and a head for your turtle. Glue the legs and head to the rock and let the glue dry. With markers you can add eyes to your turtle or glue on a couple of buttons. You could also create a design for your turtle shell with markers.
