Language: English

While her third grade classmates are sprouting seeds in paper cups, Holly has a more ambitious, innovative science project in mind. In the video, LeVar promotes the book’s theme of far-fetched fact or fiction by investigating UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects). Viewers follow a boy and his father who discover strange artifacts, visit a farmer who grows huge pumpkins, and hear a first-hand account of a UFO report.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Preferred Vehicle

If your child was about to blast off for outer space, what kind of spaceship would he or she prefer to travel in? Have them draw this ship, color it, and cut it out. In the window of the spaceship, have them draw a picture of themselves or insert a photo. Then just for fun create a solar system for your child’s bedroom. Your child will need to draw, color, and cut out the sun and each of the nine planets. Then suspend a cord across the room and use clothespins to attach each heavenly body to the cord. Suspend the spaceship near the planet your child wishes to visit first!

Postcards from Outer Space

Does your family send postcards to friends and relatives while you are vacationing? Have your family imagine that for your next trip you are visiting one of the other planets. Create funny postcards to tell relatives and friends what you see.

You will need:

  • blank index cards
  • crayons or markers

On one side of each card, your child can draw a picture of the planet he or she is visiting. Remember, the other seven planets besides Earth are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Then turn the card over to write a “wish you were here” message to a friend or relative. If your card is a standard postcard size, reserve one half of the back for a mailing address and postage stamp and actually mail the postcard to the person you are writing to. Won’t they be surprised when they receive your postcard?
