Nosey Mrs. Rat

Language: English

Mrs. Rat makes a career out of spying on her neighbors, but the tables are unexpectedly turned on her. Being a skilled observer is a valuable tool. Primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall explains how her own curiosity helped her become a leading scientist in the study of primates. A nature/wildlife photographer shows viewers how observation and scrutiny are important tricks of the trade in the world of photography.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Animal Observations

What you need:

  • pencil
  • markers or crayons
  • paper
  • an animal to watch

Choose an animal to observe in four separate sittings. These observations can be made in one day at four different times or over a period of four days.
Each time you observe the animal, write or draw what you see the animal doing. Write the date and time of each observation.

Share your observations with other family members. If two of you observed the same animal, compare notes. Then decide if you would want to trade places with the animals and tell why or why not.

Try To Remember

To play a simple memory game with the whole family, place 6 to 10 items on a tray. Give everyone one minute to study the items. Then take away the tray and have everyone list as many items as they can remember. You may want to play this game following a family trip you have taken. Include items that are souvenirs or have some special significance.

Photographs and Memories

Photographs can be a lot of fun to look at and can bring back lots of good memories from times when you have had fun with people you know and love. See if an adult will help you by getting out an old photograph album and spend some time looking at the pictures.

  • Can you tell what season it is when the picture was taken? How?
  • Guess who is in the picture. Does an adult remember who it is?
  • Look for details to see why the picture was taken. Do you know where it was taken? How about when it was taken? What are some of the clues you can be looking for?

Now, take some time to talk to an adult about the pictures, and then write how you feel about them. Write about what memories they stir up in your mind of happy times and of sad times. Share your story with an adult.
