Borreguita And The Coyote

Language: English | Español

A little lamb becomes very clever to keep a coyote from eating her. This book introduces viewers to Mexican-American culture, which is reflected in music, art, stories, and language. LeVar spends time with a family who has made guitars for three generations, visits a mural painter and her students, as well as a group that shares its musical and cultural ties.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Recite this rhyme with your child.

BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP

Baa, baa black sheep
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.
One for my master, One for my dame
And one for the little boy (girl)
Who lives down the lane

Cottonball Sheep

You will need:

  • sturdy paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • glue
  • cotton balls
  • markers
  • two spring-type clothespins
  1. Follow these directions to make each sheep. Repeat the nursery rhyme as you work.
  2. Help your child draw a small oval for the sheep’s head and large oval for the body.
  3. Use a black marker to draw eyes, mouth, and ears on each side of the head.
  4. Spread glue on one side of the body. Place cotton balls close together to cover the oval. Turn the sheep over and repeat.
  5. Clip two clothespins to the bottom of the body for legs.

Chalk Walk

It’s easy for the whole family to become involved in creating a mural on the sidewalk, using chalk. You will want to use the huge chalk sticks that are especially designed for drawing on sidewalks. Everyone can draw what they want, but remember to “think big.” Don’t worry about your sidewalk, since the art is temporary. The first good rain will wash it all away. So if you want to enjoy your mural for a while, check out the week’s weather forecast and choose a sunny week to be creative.

Miniature Guitars

To make miniature guitars that your children can take along wherever they go, all they need is a paper cup and some rubber bands. (Styrofoam cups are a bit sturdier!) Place 2 or 4 rubber bands across the opening of the cup and around its bottom. The thinner the rubber band, the higher the sound, so try using rubber bands of varying widths. Then pluck away. If the cup is white, your child might enjoy decorating it before attaching the rubber bands.
