Mrs. Tilby has decided that her life in a small town is not all she wants, so she sets off on a trip. After visiting many places—including the city, the seashore and the mountains—she buys a camper so she can be “at home” wherever she is. LeVar’s “travel’ room is filled with momentos of his many trips. He shares his memories of places where he’s been, things he’s done, and people he’s met—a New York City rooftop garden a man who raises homing pigeons, the seashore, a schooner sailing trip, a Hawaiian volcano, and a person who creates raku pottery. |
Here are activities to do after watching this episode: |

Spotting StatesThe next time you are taking a road trip with the family, play a game that has everyone looking and learning. Try spotting the names of different states on license plates. Each time a new state is named, write the name on a list and take time out to talk about what everyone knows about the state. For example:
Once you return home, use your list to mark a map of the United States by putting a star on each state you spotted and talked about. |
Travel MemoriesDevise an activity that is challenging for your children as well as one that offers a great opportunity to get some exercise for the entire family. Make a list of five things that can be found in the city. For example: taxi, clock, hotel, a restaurant that serves soup, an iron gate, a police car, a construction work site, a mailbox, a parking lot, a city bus. Then give a copy of the list to each member of your family taking the tour. Have them check off things as they are found. The first one to find all five things, gets to list the next five. Travel MemoriesDo you want to remember all those people you meet on your trips? Take along a permanent marking pen and a backpack that is a solid color. Ask the people you meet to sign their names on your backpack. |
