On The Day You Were Born

Language: English

The feature book is a sensitive and tender book about the wonder of the birth of a child. In the video LeVar takes viewers on a delicate journey into a hospital maternity ward filled with newborns. A family preparing for a new member shares how they are getting ready for the baby, and, as the time arrives for the birth, we join the mother and father in the delivery room.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Fingerprint Pals

One thing that distinguishes YOU from every other person is your fingerprint. Get a magnifying glass to examine your fingertips, or better yet, use a stamp pad to make some prints on paper.

  • Compare your right and left thumbs or pointer fingers.
  • Compare your fingerprints to those of your parents and siblings. Do they look anything alike? You don’t inherit fingerprints. So maybe not!
  • Try making animals using your fingerprints. Stamp a print on paper and then use a marker to add details to create a bird, a rabbit, a cat, or even a clipper ship.

A Way to Grow…

Materials you will need:

  • flowerpot
  • glue
  • paintbrush
  • fabric scraps
  • pinking shears
  • a plant or two and potting soil

Directions:

  1. Use the pinking shears to cut fabric scraps into two- and three-inch squares. Brush squares with glue and apply to the pot. Overlap squares for added texture, to cover the entire pot. Let it dry completely.
  2. Protect pots with a coat of spray-on clear shellac or polyurethane.

Options:
Fill the flowerpots with potting soil and plant a small flower or seeds and watch them grow. Just like a baby grows into a child, adolescent, and then an adult, a plant takes time to grow and change too. Take care of your plant and treat it kindly, just as we all want to be treated.
