The Carousel

Language: English

A carousel is the backdrop for this sensitive story about sisters who search for memories of their mother’s legacy. In the video LeVar explores the power of tradition as children share legacies that have been passed on to them. A quilt maker explains the process of making a quilt, and tells how she is passing the tradition on to her grandniece. Viewers meet a man who, with the help of Harlem school children, has designed animal shapes for a carousel he is rebuilding in the community

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Family Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking has become a popular art activity as well as a way to preserve special moments in the life of each member of your family.

For each person in your family, have a scrapbook or album to which photographs, momentos, drawings, newspaper clippings can be arranged in chronological order. Add colorful captions, designs, pictures, stickers, or other decorations to highlight the pages.
A scrapbook makes a great gift for grandparents who live far away -- and a super way to record a family’s story.

Treasure In A Bottle

Your child will enjoy making this treasure bottle to show off the tiniest of trinkets.

You will need:

  • a clean, clear plastic bottle with cap
  • small toys and trinkets that fit inside the bottle
  • uncooked rice
  1. Help your child remove any labels from the bottle.
  2. Place tiny treasures inside.
  3. Fill the bottle 2/3 full with uncooked rice
  4. Put the cap on the bottle and shake.
  5. Have your child share the treasure bottle with friends, having them slowly turn the bottle to see how many treasures they can find hidden inside.
