Pet Stories

Language: English

Two selections, “A Dog’s Tale” and “Danny and the Dinosaur,” from this anthology of popular pet stories are featured in this program. LeVar experiences the joys of pet ownership when he and his canine companion, Roy, hang out at the “U-Wash-Doggie” and have a birthday celebration for Roy at “The Three Dog Bakery.” Viewers learn about pet adoption and meet Baldo and his pet parrot Bubu. In a heart-warming segment, the owner of Scarlett, the cat who rescued her five kittens from a fire, relates the story of her special pet.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Pet Collage

You will need:

  • old magazines
  • scissors
  • glue
  • poster board or a large piece of paper

Create a pet by finding a variety of pets in old magazines. Cut out pictures of fish, dogs, birds, cats, frogs, bunnies and any other pets you can think of. Glue them all over your new pet poster. You could also cut out pictures of animals that would not be good pets and glue them on a separate piece of paper.

Pet for a Day

Have your family talk about a pet you might like to have. Look for a stuffed animal to represent your new pet. Discuss the responsibilities that go along with having a pet. Create a home for your animal out of a shoebox or other recyclable items. Think of other necessities that your pet may need, such as toys, a leash, a food/water bowl. Pretend to be a pet owner for a day.

Doggie Picture Frame

You can make your pet part of the family by making him a special picture frame. Get a box of dog treats that are shaped like bones. Find an old wood picture frame or cut a picture frame out of cardboard. Using the dog bones, glue them on the picture frame to decorate it. You can even add your dog’s name to the frame. Put a picture of your dog inside.
