Badger’s Parting Gifts

Language: English

In a touching story about friendship, beloved old Badger dies, and his friends are overwhelmed by their loss. In time, however, they comfort themselves remembering personal moments as well as the good times they shared with their pal. LeVar shares memories and feelings about his late grandmother, and joins some young friends who have created artwork in honor of their loved ones. Then a dancer with The Alvin Ailey’s Dance Company shares how the founder’s spirit is still present.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Family Tree

Here is a fun way to learn about your ancestors. Take a large piece of paper and write your child’s name at the bottom. Then branch out above and write their mother and father’s names. Continue to branch out upwards with relatives’ first, middle and last names. You can add birthdays if you wish. When the information is complete, use markers to decorate it into a tree. Look for common names passed down through the generations.

Write a Poem

When visiting about a loved one that is no longer with us, make a list of your favorite memories. After you have a list, turn your memories into a poem about your loved one. You will cherish the thoughts in years to come.

Memory Photos

Look through an old box of family photos. Create a family photo album containing favorite pictures of relatives. Share stories with you child about times spent with your parents and grandparents. Tell your child unusual things about them that made them special to you. Your child may want to spend time with older relatives asking questions about how they lived when they were a child. Take time to remember those who are no longer living.
